- Write one character per square on the manuscript paper.
- When starting the text and when a new paragraph begins, leave the first square of the line empty and start writing from the second square.
- Within the same paragraph, do not leave the first square empty except at the beginning. If there is no space left at the end of a line, do not insert a space; continue from the first square of the next line. (This applies regardless of whether a V mark is shown or not.)
- Arabic numerals are written two digits per square.
- Punctuation marks are generally written one per square. However, a dash (―) and an ellipsis (……) occupy two squares.
- After a question mark (?) or exclamation mark (!), leave one square empty. However, after a period (.), comma (,), or colon (:), leaving a space is optional.
- If the last square of a line already contains a character and there is no square left for punctuation, place the punctuation mark in the same final square as the character.
