Questions

  • How does comprehensible input compare to explicit learning in terms of time investment ROI?

    Criticism

    • Some have argued that Krashen's theory is not testable (why not?).
    • Often used in the Japanese language learning community, where many learners have listening-only goals (media consumption, anime)
      • Speaking is an inherently physical activity. You can't learn how to sing by listening to music.
      • Counter point: Although speaking can indirectly assist in language acquisition, the ability to speak is not the cause of language learning or acquisition. Instead, comprehensible output is the effect of language acquisition.
